BEGINNING OF THE LAST YEAR

For me, this semester started with analyzing geomorphologic and landscape conditions of assigned site which is located in Ankara, Çukurambar. My starting point is trying to understand Çukurambar, its value and tried to understand why Çukurambar emerged? For this purpose, I worked on Ankara’s previous map, superposing it with the existing condition of equal limits.

To analyze the center of the city, the map above is not enough for examining the current situation of the city. First map is created after analyzing existing situation. The previous city center colored with yellow to observe scale difference of these two maps.

To understand the city, I worked on maps which abstracted in different levels. For examining zones of the city, main roads and districts map created. Roads can be examined as continuous voids of the city. That’s why while examining the city in larger scale, main roads thought as borders between zones.

Çukurambar is located at intersection point of various zones which contain both military,ministry, traditional and university districts. Çukurambar has relation with various zones, which also gives a potential to our site.

Solid void map is beneficial to examine components of the city, zones and relations of zones worked through solid void map.

SEARCHING FOR A NEW GRAPHIC TECHNIQUES

“Modern buildings even started to look like medical images.” I should confess that, this sentence that I read in an article make me think about many things. It also shaped my graphic design technique. 🙂

Analyzing continued in macro and micro scale. While getting deeper, I interpreted that, Çukurambar can be examined as composed of repeating cell systems. In larger scale, other organs also affect character of the site. It can be interpreted as metabolism, it is a living organism. Heterogenity of the system is uncontrollable.

Those maps are created with collected information: respectively offices, cafe’s, stores and residential structures pointed. Those maps can be assumed as structures domain and range diagram. They are also affecting close periphery. After juxtaposition of all maps, examining genes of our site became easier. Site is affected by all repeating genes of Çukurambar.

I started case studies with remembering Bigness theory, which was also published with the book S,M,L,XL. I read the article before to examine 21st centuries conditions.  Selected case studies are TOBB ETU Technology Centre and Ege Plaza.

MORE ABOUT FINAL JURY

Diversity of users should be considered through design. In my 302 studio project, I did not want to put an elevator for people who are not able to walk. I assume elevators as teleportation machines. While putting an elevator, experiences should also be thought. Since it is a “city bazaar” project, my aim is to took people one place to another through wandering. Ramps and stairs attached to walls, which are interpreted traces of 18th centuries dividing walls. For equitable use, my strategy is ensure same means of use for everyone. I used ramps as tactic to provide circulation for disabled human.

I think, flexibility in use should be compulsory in 21st centuries designs.

“…Solid architectural wall was melting away under the pressure of modernity.” Blurring boundaries and limits are returns of industrialization. After physical boundaries vanishing through technology, new ideas of modernism… human beings started to search the possibility of  “adaptibility of spaces” in place of isolating spaces through dividing from each other. Many designers such as Cedric Price do not dictated any function for spaces, program became more important than the function. Relation of spaces create connection, isolation between spaces which thought after thinking program while designing. According to Cedric Price, through design process, possibilities of programs, interactive and variable architecture should be questioned by creators. With modernization, “What building performs?” became more important than “What building is?”. Limits of spaces should be flexible for fitting various programs and unthinkable conditions.  After researches about “flexibility in use”, I aimed to create spaces without predetermined, dictated functions for spaces. Flexible, changeable program became more important for me.  In my project, I asked a question for myself: how can 18th centuries dividing walls be interpreted in 21st century? I tried to explain the changes in 21st century in upper paragraphs. I thought 21st centuries wall should not for isolation, should not for dividing functions, they should framing active instances, this idea came to my mind from “Hogwarts portraits” They give movement, life to wall. Students were examining living paintings on the wall: this is what 21st centuries wall should provide: it should be a living thing, not a static or rigid mass.

Design should minimize risks while also minimizing unfavorable results of accidents, involuntary movements which can give harm to any user. Railings can be tool for tolerance for error. In my project, installations (40 cm depth space provided) positioned inside of 10 cm reinforced concrete walls. To intervene in any fault condition, shutters which can open and close used. So, expert can deal with problem.

I agree with Robert Venturi, who supports complexity is a part of architecture, it should not be ignored. However it does not means complexity is not a think which cannot emerge with simplicity. Actually, “simple and intuitive” idea in designs become important after architecture become chaotic with industrialization. Chaos cannot be regarded in architecture, or also it cannot be ignored by designers, architects have to find ways to deal with chaos. In metropolis, chaos is more visible and intensive. Architects should find methods to deal with chaos. Actually, I think chaos is not something people should afraid, it is the new condition of new, industrialized world. Through my design process, my strategy was “dealing with chaos through simple and intuitive design”. I used zoning and circulation as tactics. You may say “How can circulation be a tactic? It is necessary.” My way of using circulation is my way to deal with chaos. While determining circulation, I tried to direct people without confusion, in an open and simple manner while passing through every spaces.

 

 

Use of space -regardless of users body size, mobility, posture- considered. In my project, dimensions of ramps are determined by me while thinking involuntary conditions: width of ramps  are 2 meters, which is also comfortable for fluctuating people. Maximum slope of ramps is five, which is also determined while thinking various conditions. Also, variations of in hand and grip size, considered, size of tables determined with caring variations of user dimensions and variations of activity. In project, I designed lifts for material transportation which are necessary materials for producing. For example, on north facade, Studios, ateliers and workshops zone positioned. There is a wood workshop and size of lift which can transport boards through -5.00 to +5.00 considered while thinking dimension of boards. The size of lift is 350 cm x 400 cm. So, timbers can travel easily with lifts.:) Another example for this lifts is lift for temporary installations. The size of lift is 200 cm x 600 cm. It has rectangular form relating with usage of lift. For temporary installations, long and modular components would be beneficial which can be taken apart again. Dimension of created streets also thought while thinking hierarchical. For example, the main road which is transition zone, connects Kapalı Çarşı with east site is the widest road which also create spaces with expanding. However, not to contradict my agreed thoughts about Cedric Price, Rem Koolhaas and others that thought not dictating people while providing only dictated format, I tried to create many roads which connect various zones. Also zoning idea was interpreted by me while relating it with 21st century. My walls and interpreted thoughts about 21st centuries wall helped me to deal with limited zoning idea. Horizontal surfaces are dissolving into each other, through infiltrating from walls which are no more defining border between spaces.

While designing, I used 1.5 level differences between spaces which are connected with ramps and stairs instead of separating floors from each other. There is no “first floor” “second floor”… which are connected with elevator and stairs, which have separate concepts from each other. Since it is a bazaar project, it is consist of experimental congestion, but this congestion controlled. To deal with separation of floors, I used ramps. So, floors are continuing and they emerged with the operation “folding”. I tried to allow users maintaining their neutral body position. As we know, plug sockets are essential and necessary in studios. The amount of plugs should be enough for users. Or in wood studio, they should not use stairs or ramps to reach tools. It should not be hard to buy timber or move it to somewhere.
